The first Varsity Match was held in 1891, however it wasn't officially until 1893 that Half Blues were awarded for water polo. In those days there were only 7 players on a team with no substitutes, so 7 Half Blues were awarded each year. At some point the rules were changed to allow subs and it was decided that any playing member on the Varsity team would recieve a Half Blue.

In 19XX water polo was upgraded to a Discretionary Full Blue Sport, where by any playing member of the Varsity squad automatically recieves a Half Blue with exceptionally note worthy players recieving Full Blues.
